Used Kobalux 21mm f/2.8 Lens for Leica M
The Kobalux 21mm f/2.8 Super Wide (also sold under the Avenon name as the "L 21:2.8") is a rangefinder-coupled ultra-wide prime lens for Leica M-mount cameras, produced by the small Japanese optical manufacturer Y.K. Optical in Yokohama. Marketed under several brand names including Kobalux, Avenon, Bower, and Pasoptik depending on region, the lens was predominantly sold as "Kobalux" in North America and "Avenon" in Japan, with most examples built in Leica screw mount (LTM) and offered with an optional M-mount adapter — direct M-mount examples like this one are comparatively less common. Praised on release for its performance relative to period Leica and Zeiss alternatives at the same focal length, the lens has since earned a reputation as an affordable, capable entry into ultra-wide rangefinder shooting.
The optical formula consists of 8 elements in 6 groups, and a 6-blade diaphragm covers an aperture range from f/2.8 to f/22. The lens is compact for its focal length at approximately 220g and 48mm mounted length, with a 58mm front filter thread. Rangefinder coupling allows accurate focusing through the camera's viewfinder, though a dedicated 21mm external viewfinder was also produced by Y.K. Optical and was sometimes bundled with the lens. Due to its rear element protruding deep into the camera body, the lens is not compatible with certain older Leica screw-mount bodies with internal light shields, though this direct M-mount version does not carry that limitation.
