The 7Artisans 35mm f/5.6 Wen is an ultra-compact pancake lens for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras, part of 7Artisans' "Wen" series designed specifically for the M-mount system. At just 21.75mm thick and 128g, it is among the thinnest lenses available for Leica M cameras, prioritizing portability and everyday carry over speed. Unlike a conventional lens, a distinctive focus lever built into the front element assembly doubles as a lens protection cover, allowing quick switching between snap focus and a 30cm minimum focus distance with a smooth 45° throw from close focus to infinity.
The optical formula consists of 5 elements in 4 groups, including two ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements to control chromatic aberration and minimize color distortion. The fixed f/5.6 aperture provides a broad depth of field well suited to street, landscape, and documentary photography where quick, unobtrusive shooting is a priority, with a soft vignette adding a vintage character to images. The lens carries a Chinese character ("文" / Wen) engraved on a red lacquer background, a design detail unique to the Leica M-mount version. As a fully manual lens with no electronic contacts, the camera's "shoot without lens" setting must be enabled to fire the shutter.
